The Port Arch
Bronze, height c.160 cm, 2004
Situated at the left-hand roadside entering Port Elphinstone from the south.
Commissioned as a gateway sculpture for Port Elphinstone, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire.
I worked on this piece during residency at the Scottish Sculpture Woprkshop at Lumsden, casting parts of it there and having the rest cast at Black Isle Bronze in Nairn. I also cut and carved the base granite stones at SSW.
The design takes as its theme the confluence of river and old canal at Port Elphinstone, with decoration incised over the arch using illustrations of local history produced by children at the local Primary school. Their signatures are cast into the underside of the piece.
